Plecanatide

Plecanatide is a guanylate cyclase-C (GC-C) agonist used in the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in adults. It helps promote regular bowel movements by increasing fluid secretion in the intestines and accelerating transit.

Uses

  • Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC)
  • Irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C)

How it works

Plecanatide is a structural analog of human uroguanylin. It activates guanylate cyclase-C receptors in the intestinal lining, which increases levels of cyclic GMP. This stimulates secretion of chloride and bicarbonate into the intestinal lumen via CFTR channels, resulting in increased fluid secretion and motility, thereby easing bowel movements.

  • Reduces straining during defecation
  • Improves quality of life in IBS-C patients
